About Saint Albans:

St. Albans is a city located in Kanawha County, West Virginia at the confluence of the Kanawha and Coal Rivers. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,567.

St. Albans was laid out in 1816. Originally, it was known as Philippi, after Philip Thompson, an early settler, the name afterwards being changed to Coalsmouth due to its location at the mouth of the Coal River. The city was then incorporated as Kanawha City in 1868. Its name was changed to St. Albans in 1871 after it was suggested by a man named Parsons, a member of the town Council, after his hometown of St. Albans, Vermont.

Main Street, in downtown St. Albans, has been converted to Olde Main Plaza, which effectively killed off the businesses there.

Saint Albans Geography:

St. Albans is located at 38°22'49" North, 81°49'11" West (38.380365, -81.819712).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 km2 (3.7 mi2). 9.4 km2 (3.6 mi2) of it is land and 0.2 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.16% water.

Saint Albans Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,567 people, 5,185 households, and 3,390 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,233.7/km2 (3,196.0/mi2). There are 5,467 housing units at an average density of 583.1/km2 (1,510.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 95.37% White, 2.84% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,185 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,130, and the median income for a family is $47,913. Males have a median income of $35,978 versus $25,030 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,806. 8.2% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
